Avoiding a Washington Vehicle Accident this Summer

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, June, July, and August are the deadliest months for drivers with more car crashes and vehicular-related deaths and injuries than any other time in the year. So what might be the cause of this?

School’s out and more teenagers are hitting the open road during this season. Because of a variety of factors, such as lack of driving experience and an increased likelihood for distracted driving behaviors, teenage drivers are just as much of a danger to themselves as they are to us. Beginning from Memorial Day to Labor Day, teen drivers are up to 16% more likely to die in an automobile crash during this period. AAA has even dubbed it the “100 deadliest days” of the summer driving season.

However, teen drivers aren’t all to blame. Summer is a popular time for road construction and work zones, which are an added road hazard for motorists. Additionally, more bikers and motorcyclists are sharing the streets this season. Lack of visibility is the most common cause of accidents involving bikes or motorcyclists and other motorists.

While we can’t always protect ourselves from other drivers, you can reduce your risk of getting in a vehicle accident this summer by being prepared.

Keep your vehicle properly maintained
Be sure to regularly check your tire’s’ tread wear and air pressure. Hot temperatures can cause the air inside your tires to expand, which can lead to a blowout if they are well-worn. Properly maintained tires will decrease the chance of breakdowns and crashes, and will improve your vehicle’s handling and gas mileage. Hot temperatures can also cause cooling system problems. It’s essential to check the coolant and cooling system regularly to prevent your vehicle from overheating.

Never drive tired or fatigued
Far too many drivers think that simply rolling down the window, drinking a cup of coffee, or turning up the radio is enough to help keep them awake while driving. Make no mistake: drowsy driving, similar to drinking and driving, can be life-threatening. If you’re planning on taking any road trips this summer, be sure to plan out your travels to include plenty of rest stops and breaks along the way.

Be aware of sun glare
When driving on a sunny day or at certain times when the sun is directly in the line of sight, take necessary precautions to ensure your safety on the road. In a split second, your blinded or obstructed vision can easily cause a vehicle accident if you’re not careful. Whether it’s slowing down, pulling over, or putting on polarized sunglasses, knowing ways to manage or avoid sun glare is important not only for your safety, but the safety of pedestrians and other motorists as well.
