Motorcycle Safety Tips For Spring

Springtime in the Pacific Northwest means two things: baseball season and perfect weather in the upper 60’s. Chances are if you’re a motorcycle enthusiast, the sun makes you want to rev up your bike and get to cruisin’. However, it goes without saying that there are inherent risks you face every time you hit the open road.

Motorcycle riding in the Pacific Northwest

Motorcycle accidents are more likely to result in serious injury or death than in automobile accidents. According to the Institute for Highway Safety, motorcyclists are actually 26 times more likely to die in a crash compared to someone in an automobile. While helmets are reported to be 37 percent effective in preventing motorcycle deaths and 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries, only 19 states including the District of Columbia require helmet use by all riders.

Whether you’re a seasoned motorcyclist or new to riding, it’s important to always stay refreshed on safety information. Here are a few safety tips to remember before hitting the pavement this spring.

    • If your motorcycle has been sitting in storage all winter, perform a thorough mechanical inspection before your first ride of the season.
    • Road hazards that develop over the winter, such as potholes and gravel, are always a concern come springtime. Be aware of the road conditions that you plan to ride through before you rev up.
    • Always wear protective gear, including helmet (be sure to choose one with that is Department of Transportation-approved), eyewear protection, long sleeve shirt and pants. While it may be sandal season, never wear open-toed shoes while riding.
    • Consider wearing brightly-colored or reflective clothing items to help other motorists see you easier. While we may have more daylight now during this time of year, poor visibility is perhaps the most common cause of motorcycle accidents.

Babe Ruth once famously said, “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.” When it comes to motorcycles, Bambino’s sentiment also applies. You should never let the fear of getting into an accident prevent you from doing something you love.
